According to Mirror (UK), Marc Overmars is the newest candidate for MU’s sports director seat. Previously, former goalkeeper Van der Sar was contacted for the position. Currently, Marc Overmars is the sporting director at Ajax. This 47-year-old player played for Arsenal between 1997 and 2000. He and “Gunners” won 1 Premier League title. Van der Sar (50 years old) is also working at Ajax with Marc Overmars. Former MU goalkeeper holds the CEO position at the Dutch club.
Recently, Marc Overmars has expressed his desire to find a new challenge in the near future. Not only Overmars, Van der Sar also intends to leave Ajax in the future. This duo has contributed to the success of Ajax in recent years. Overmars will fully meet MU’s criteria for the position of a sports director.
“When I was appointed to this job at Ajax, I knew I would only stay three years or a maximum of 4 years,” said Overmars. “But I’ve been at the club for eight seasons already. Neither I nor Van der Sar will continue with the club until the age of 60. The Ajax work took us a lot of energy. Even so, this work also gives us great things. Edwin and I are proud to bring Ajax back into the right position of the club.“
The Overmars duo – Van der Sar can move to MU to revive the Old Trafford team. “Van der Sar and I have a special relationship. The best part is that we came together in the 90s of the last century and have had success as players. At that time, I didn’t realize how special it was. Twenty-five years later, together we have had success at the managerial level again, ”said Overmars. “We have the same ambition, which is to help Ajax reach the European Cup Final. We did it in 2017 (Ajax entered the Europa League Final). Now, we have bigger ambitions than that. We want Ajax to win either the Europa League or the Champions League.“
MU has publicly intended to recruit a sports director in the last three seasons when the Old Trafford team has been criticized for poor shopping on Techmart. Meanwhile, Overmars helped Ajax build a quality youth recruitment and training system in the Netherlands, which caught the attention of the whole of Europe. In recent seasons, Ajax has continuously sold talented young players at sky-high prices. Notably, the case of De Ligt and De Jong. Ajax sold De Ligt to Juventus for 75 million euros, while Frenkie de Jong moved to Barcelona for the same price.
According to statistics, Ajax made £ 250 million from the sale of players like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt, Davinson Sanchez, Hakim Ziyech and Van de Beek in recent seasons. They also won the double domestic title in the 2018-19 season. It was also the season that Ajax reached the Champions League Semi-Finals.
Meanwhile, MU did not win any Premier League title in 7 years after Sir Alex retired, despite the “Red Devils” spending £ 1 billion on Techmart. David Moyes, Van Gaal and Jose Mourinho are all sacked while Solskjaer is facing great pressure. Many MU fans believe that Executive Vice President Ed Woodward and Head of Transfer Negotiation Matt Judge are responsible for the poor procurement of the club. MU pursued Jadon Sancho during the summer but could not recruit this player. According to Mirror, the appointment of Overmars to the position of sports director can help MU make positive changes in the player procurement stage.
